You are sitting at your desk trying to concentrate when it starts again.
That tiny flutter underneath your eye.
Twitch. Stop. Twitch again.
It is usually more irritating than painful, but when it keeps coming back, it is natural to wonder whether your body is trying to tell you something.
Search for “eye twitching” online and magnesium deficiency quickly appears as one of the explanations. It is repeated so often that it can sound like a settled fact.
The reality is more nuanced.
Magnesium is essential for normal muscle and nervous system function, and significant magnesium deficiency can cause neuromuscular symptoms. But current research does not show that an everyday twitching eyelid is a reliable sign that you are low in magnesium.
So what actually causes eye twitching? Where does magnesium fit into the picture? And when is it worth getting checked?
Here is what the evidence tells us.
What is an eye twitch?
The most common type of eyelid twitching is called eyelid myokymia.
It is an involuntary contraction of the small muscles around the eyelid, often affecting just one eye at a time.
You may feel it much more strongly than anyone else can see it.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, eyelid myokymia is extremely common and is usually harmless.
For most people, it appears for a while and then disappears again.
The eyelids are constantly working. We blink thousands of times every day, and the small muscles and nerves controlling that movement are sensitive to things such as tiredness, stress and eye strain.
That means a twitch does not necessarily indicate that anything is wrong.
What actually causes eye twitching?
There is rarely one single explanation.
Some of the factors most commonly associated with eyelid twitching include:

Screen time

When we stare at screens, we tend to blink less frequently. That can contribute to dry eyes and eye strain, while hours of concentrated visual work may increase fatigue around the small muscles of the eyelid.
If your twitch tends to appear after a long day on your laptop or phone, your magnesium status may therefore be much less relevant than the amount of work your eyes have been doing.
Caffeine
Caffeine is another well-recognised trigger.
Coffee, tea, energy drinks and other caffeinated products stimulate the nervous system, and some people appear to be more sensitive to their effects than others.

So where does magnesium come in?
Magnesium is an essential mineral with important roles throughout the body.

At the same time, this stage of life often coincides with intense demands from work, family and everything else competing for attention.
So if an unexplained twitch suddenly appears, it can be tempting to put it down to “hormones”.
There is some interesting research around magnesium and female hormones.
Research has suggested that oestrogen may influence magnesium absorption and how magnesium is distributed and retained in the body.
That has led scientists to investigate whether changing hormone levels around menopause can affect magnesium status.
But there is currently not good evidence showing that:

Could your magnesium intake still be low?
Possibly.
Magnesium is found naturally in many everyday foods, but intake will vary considerably depending on what you eat.

If these foods rarely appear in your diet, it may be useful to consciously introduce more of them.

A better question is:
“Am I regularly eating foods that give my body the magnesium it needs?”
